Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach
Biology
The Pennsylvania cockroach is normally found in southern states, Midwestern states, and northeastern states. They are commonly referred to as the “wood roach”. The wood roach are brown in color with black wings that cover their backs; females have noticeably smaller wings. Males are able to fly for short periods while the females are flightless. These cockroaches have 3 developmental stages; egg, nymph, and adult. Females will use a glue like substance to secure their egg cases in protected spaces close to a food source. Generally, these egg cases contain about 16 eggs. On average females live 34-181 days while males live 112-160 days.
Feeding Preferences
This species only feeds on dead organic matter.
Transmitted Diseases
The Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach does not transmit human diseases or bacteria.
Habits
The wood cockroach lives primarily outside. They can be found in tree stumps, in wood piles, or in leaf litter. They may gain entrance to your structure by firewood. They are also attracted to light which is another reason they try to gain access to the interior of structures. This specific type of cockroach cannot survive indoors.
Cockroach Extermination
There is no need for any type of interior extermination as this species cannot survive indoors for any lengthy amount of time. Preventative measures on the exterior of the structure is what is advised. This includes sealing cracks/ crevices on your structure, screens on windows/doors, and treating with extermination services if there is an infestation within the exterior siding or shingles.
